CampusEvolve awarded $2M from Gitlab foundation to grow the pathways ai project

Seattle, WA – April 2, 2026

CampusEvolve has been awarded a $2 million scaling grant from the GitLab Foundation’s AI for Economic Opportunity Fund. CampusEvolve is one of six organizations selected from 27 grantees across two cohorts to receive additional funding. The two-year grant will enable the Pathways AI Project – a coalition co-designing the AI Guide led by CampusEvolve - to extend beyond high schools to adult learning, training, and career pathway programs statewide. With this grant, the GitLab Foundation is joining the Gates Foundation and the Schultz Family Foundation in funding the Pathways AI Project.

A Navigation Crisis Demanding a New Approach

Across Washington and many other states, learners face hundreds of disconnected pathways programs and thousands of credential options—often with a single counselor stretched across 500 or more students. At every critical transition—from high school to postsecondary, from education into the workforce—learners lose the human advisors who guided them. According to recent numbers, low-income students in Washington graduate high school at 77%, but only 43% enroll in postsecondary education. The steepest drop-offs happen precisely where advisory support evaporates.

The AI Guide: Persistent, Personalized Pathways Guidance

The AI Guide is a conversational AI tool that serves as a coordinating layer across Washington’s education and workforce ecosystem—enabling disconnected programs and resources to be curated for each learner’s personal goals and context. The AI Guide does not replace human advisors—it amplifies their expertise and extends their reach. And it fills a critical gap they cannot: it persists with learners after they leave a school or program, carrying their context, progress, and goals across every institutional boundary and life transition.

Co-designed with students, advisors, and state partners through rapid-cycle design sprints, the tool is built with AI safety as its architectural foundation—independently bias-tested and red-teamed by Humane Intelligence.

A Statewide Coalition

The Pathways AI Project brings together the College Success Foundation, Washington Student Achievement Council, Washington Workforce Training & Education Coordinating Board, Yakima and Port Angeles School Districts, MDRC, Humane Intelligence, the Tech Alliance, and a cohort of AI solution companies—each bringing advising depth, policy authority, labor-market intelligence, rigorous evaluation, and the voices of learners directly into the design process. More partners, representing post-secondary pathway and workforce development programs are joining the Pathways AI Project as a result of this grant.

CampusEvolve is developing a blueprint for expansion to additional states by 2027.

“Washington is leading the nation by showing how AI can be deployed responsibly at scale to serve real learners, real families, and real communities,” said Maria Langworthy, CEO of CampusEvolve. “With our partners, we are co-creating how AI—when embedded in trusted relationships—can help the state achieve its goals for credential attainment and a thriving labor market.”
